IDIS ORLOG's "Froya og Svipdag and Songs from Njartharlag", continues the project's devotion to capturing the heart and spirit of Northern nature through word and sound. IDIS ORLOG is a folk music endeavor rooted in the old stories with songs dedicated to ancestral lore, the turning of the seasons, the solstices, and the archetypal forces that shape our past, present, and future. At its core lies a drive to reach the roots, to touch the essence of things, and to seek truth through tradition. IDIS means "goddess" or "protectress", while ORLOG refers to interwoven fate or karma.
This latest release explores the interplay of opposing forces: the return of light after darkness, the winter solstice's frozen dawn, and the reunion of lovers separated by fate. These themes echo through the saga of Froya (Freya) and Svipdag, as well as the ancient cult site of Njartharlag now known as Tysnes in southern Hordaland, western Norway.
As Freya and Svipdag meet once more and the sun rises over the mountaintop to illuminate the old altar, the album unfolds through entirely acoustic instrumentation: harp, guitar, Hardanger fiddle, shaman drum, mouth harp, flute, and voice. Siv Idis is joined by Runahild of Eliwagar, who contributes drum, fiddle, flute, and backing vocals across most tracks. The album flows naturally from its predecessor, "The Spiral Tide of Seasons" yet expands the projectss sound with greater texture, dimension, and depth.
For those seeking a deeper connection to ancestral roots and Nordic mythology, "Froya og Svipdag and Songs from Njartharlag" offers a grounded yet expansive journey—earthbound in its authenticity, but vast in atmosphere and spirit.
