Review

MORBID
MORBID formed in late 1986, spearheaded by Per Ohlin—better known as Dead of MAYHEM—and the enigmatic "Slator". Despite their brief existence, MORBID became one of the foundational forces in Sweden’s emerging extreme metal movement. Their 1987 demo "December Moon" was recorded just before internal fractures began: guitarist John Hagström departed shortly after the session, and Dead soon left for Norway to join MAYHEM, effectively ending the band.

Why "December Moon" Endures to this day!
Most demos require lowered expectations—rough sketches of ideas that later become refined on full-length albums. "December Moon" is the rare exception. While the production is raw and the execution unpolished, the songwriting is fully realized, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with many of the early Swedish death metal releases of the emerging and rapidly growing genre. It’s a document of a band whose creative spark was already burning at full intensity while in their "demo" era....

MORBID remain one of metal’s greatest "what-ifs". Recorded in 1987, "December Moon" was a pioneering album that helped shape what would become both Swedish death metal and the early dark corridors and contours of Norwegian black metal. Its sound straddles thrash aggression, the embryonic Swedish death metal style, and the eerie vocal approach Dead would later bring to MAYHEM. The demo captures a band on the cusp of defining a genre—only to vanish before they could fully realize their "true" potential. Rather than mourn the bands short lifespan, "December Moon" still to this day invites celebration: homage and worship of a brief but monumental glimpse into a iconic band whose influence has far outlived their time as a band.

Fan-made, label-free high-quality editions of two essential underground classics: “Into the Abyss” by Germany’s POISON and “December Moon” by Sweden’s legendary MORBID (featuring Dead of MAYHEM).

POISON
POISON was a pioneering death/thrash outfit from Ulm, Germany active from 1982 to 1987—right in the middle of Europe’s first true deep underground metal surge. Their lone official release, Into the Abyss, stands today as a cult monument to that era’s raw ambition and intense creativity. In 1987, the band landed a spot on Roadrunner Records’ Teutonic Invasion Part One sampler, a coveted opportunity at the time. But the offer came shackled with a restrictive contract barring them from signing with any other label for twelve months. Roadrunner never followed through, leaving POISON suspended in uncertainty while the scene around them evolved at breakneck speed. After months of waiting, rehearsing, watching the hype and momentum of working with a big label like Roadrunner slip away, the band dissolved leaving "Into the Abyss" as their only formal legacy. And what a legacy it is. This EP is a time capsule of pure, venomous energy: precise, savage, and steeped in the atmosphere of mid-’80s European extremity. It feels like something unearthed from a frozen crypt—still sharp, still dangerous, still burning with the spirit of a scene that was inventing itself in real time. And now buried in time... However still potent!
