Ligfaerd drags the listener into a deeper, colder abyss than anything NORTT carved before—an album built on negative space, where the silence between notes feels just as crushing as the notes themselves. Instead of the claustrophobic burial of Graven, this record opens into a vast, dead expanse: a windless plain of frost and stone where sound travels slowly and returns even slower. The guitars scrape across the void like rusted gates shifting in an abandoned cemetery, while the piano tolls with the distant, hollow resonance of a funeral bell heard through thick fog. The vocals—half-formed snarls, half-spirit murmurs—float through the mix like something refusing to leave its grave. Drums strike with ritualistic patience, each hit spaced out like the final steps of a procession no one survives. Synths and strings drift like cold vapors, giving the album a haunted spaciousness that makes every chord feel monumental, fragile, and doomed. Ligfaerd is not just funeral doom—it’s the sound of the world after the funeral, a barren ghost-realm where memory fades, light dies, and the listener is left alone with the echo of their own ending.
Where Graven suffocated with closeness, Ligfaerd isolates with distance—evoking the bleak minimalism of THERGOTHON, the ceremonial emptiness of SKEPTICISM, and the frost-bitten ambience of BURZUM’s darkest synth passages. There’s a gravity akin to XASTHUR, FUNERAL and MOURNFUL CONGREGATION, but NORTT’s approach here is more ghost-ridden, more spacious, and far more spiritually desolate. Ligfaerd stands apart as one of the genre’s most atmospheric and hollowed-out works, perfect for listeners who crave funeral doom that feels less like a burial and more like wandering the afterlife alone.
